Key-word related Traffic Criteria

I nearly fell of the chair…

Reading this article brought a completely other point of view regarding keyword search into my mind.

Up to now I was not so much interested to understand the whole adword and PPC stuff because within Yorgoo we have other ways to get known which fit our beginner’s budget.
But when I have read this article I was really shocked, how many additional thoughts you have to take into consideration when deciding which keywords you will use for your niche and your products.

For me the whole keyword subject is so important and so big and so timeconsuming and needs so much knowledge that I ask myself when there will be the first University for Keyword teachers will be opened. The Internet is full of students… but you really have to be lucky to find a good teacher too.

So take advantage of the chance you get  here and read everything I can share with you from Yorgo’s knowledge.

Yorgo PictureKey-word related Traffic Criteria

How much traffic do you need to earn 100$ from Google AdSense?

To bring this question down to something measurable, we need to start with some assumptions:

  1. Suppose you get for every click on a Google Ad on your site 10 cents
  2. Suppose that 5% of your visitors click on a Google Ad
  3. Suppose you are on Google’s top 10 on the concerned keyword search returns.
  4. Suppose 50% of the reported searches concern Google, the rest Yahoo and MSN.

Difficulties:

  1. Google Ads Clicks can return 2 cents or even a few dollars. The 10 cent assumption is therefore just for the purpose of calculation and before optimization as discussed in Yam, The Affiliate Mastery Book.

  2. Google considers a 5% conversion rate as good. Most people would be below, however optimization as discussed in YAM allows expectations of above 5%.

  3. The primary goal must be to reach Google’s top 10 on the selected key-words as about 80% of the serches concern page 1 of the search results and the other 20% go on page 2 and others. If you are on page two, divide your expectations by 4 or 5.

Let’s calculate now:

100$ correspond to 1000 clicks at 10 cents per click.

If 1000 clicks represent 5% of my page-views (or visitors) then 100% equals 20 times more or 20,000 visitors per month or roughly 670 per day.

If we use the Keyword Analyzer  (you can get HERE for free) we see the following results on a keyword search for mp3: keaword searches on MP3 - screenshot

The keyword analyzer is reflecting searches on Google, Yahoo and MSN. We assume that 50% of the traffic reflected concerns Google.

If we go straight for the key-word mp3, we notice: there are 20 000 searches per day.

50% is for Google, that’s 10′000 per day.

If we are on the top 10 on Google under the key-word mp3, we share this traffic with 9 other sites on the left side and lets suppose 5 Google Advertisers. There are thus 15 links sharing 10,000 visitors.

10,000 : 15 = 670 for each link on average!

Result: I reach my bench-mark and should expect under the given assumptions to earn $100 from Google AdSense in a months time.

This purely hypothetical example shows not only the importance of traffic, but also the importance of optimization. If Google pays for every click 3 $ (yes, that exists) then you only need 33 clicks to reach your $100 and you need obviously a lot less traffic, something like 50 visitors per day will do.

I hope this will give an idea about the dimensions we have to think in when we select the niches we want to explore.

The good news is however: Google pays very little for our effort; there are much better ways to get rewarded for our work, using monetization features as discussed in Affiliate Mastery. or a mix of different monetization strategies.

Yorgo PictureKeyword Search: it’s all about Traffic

After yesterday’s samples on Obesity and Cancer, I will look into some other areas where popular searches are pointing to. remember: the important issue is traffic for the purpose of our excercise as traffic converts to income. You will notice: there is not much of a difference in our appreciation of traffic between YORGOO Traffic and Google Traffic: it’s the same principle as you need to match bench-marks to reach profitability.

1. Organic Gardening

With the two first key-phrases you participate in about 8000 searches:

How and where to find Profitable Keywords - by Yorgo Nestouridis

How and where to find

Profitable Keywords

Today I found this article in Yorgoopublishing and I think it is one of the best I ever read about  “Keywordsearch”. Up to now I always  felt like being on a roller coaster when it comes to this subject - a permanet up and down.

“Yes, now I understood”, “I thought I understood”, I still don’t really know how to do it right”, “Oh yes, now I got it”, “Can you help me, I must do something wrong” - this way it went nearly the whole last year and I slowly got so upset with myself. I always thought I was not stupid, but regarding keywordsearch I really have not eaten the wisdom with a silverspoon.

This article suddenly makes it all so clear to me. I can imaging Yorgo leaning back in his officechair holding his stomach and nearly dying from laughter, when he reads this. He would say, that he did not tell us anything else the whole time as he has written here in his article. And he is true, I only did not check it.

I think my mistake just was, that I always were searching for keywords in a huge niche like “Affiliate Marketing”, “Work from home” and such alike.

But a few days ago I bumbed with a niche while searching for something else at google and I wanted to find out if this niche would be worth to talk about. I told Yorgo about it. He did a short keywordsearch and got so excited and shouted a German word, which unfortunately I cannot translate in english. For those who understand German - it was “Oberaffentittengeil”.

And believe it or not, since this day my inner blokade against keywordsearch was broken and now I dare to say: “my God, I got it”. You will read about this niche as soon as I got my new Semiomantics XY Ycademy site in our June Seminar.

Sorry for this extremely long article including Yorgos advise about keywordsearch, but I had to rtell you, why I think this article is extremely helpful and worth reading it.

To your success

Tips and Principles

In recent days and in view of the new semantic Ycademy Publishing sites we received many questions about how and where to find “profitable” keywords and niches.

The answer is not an easy one, the more that no one will reveal his main money making keywords. However I will try to give you some ideas and tips here after.

If we talk about profitability, we need to define HOW we want to achieve the profit. For the purpose of this exercise, let’s assume we want to make $100 per month with Google AdSense.

Principle number 1: B2C is better than B2B

A Business to Customer approach is better than a Business to Business approach. The reason is simple to understand: how many of all internet users surf Google because they want to do business and how many search for a benefit, businesses (or publishers) provide? I have never come accross exact statistics, however let’s assume 1% of all users provide services, products or knowledge and 99% are looking for what’s on offer.

If you target businesses, you target only 1 % of all users and you shut the dor to 99% of internet users, or you shut the door to 99% of the traffic. Google AdSense earnings are about the number of clicks and that’s largely function of the number of visitors, or short: Traffic.

Principle number 2: Search in your day to day life for a topic or niche

Start by asking yourself: “What are my main worries in day to day life?”

The common answers could be something like: the cancer of a near parent or friend, my weight and shape, my month end, my mortgage, the health of my children, my over-stretched credit card, how to make more money, the heart condition of my grand-father, my grand-mothers alzheimers, the disability of a near friend …. my upcoming wedding, my divorce, mom’s birthday, my nutrition while being pregnant, …

…  just things from day to day life which worry YOUand with you thousands of people.

Principle number 3: Assess the daily traffic and the competition

I use the YORGOO Keyword analyser for this part as it gives me a list of related keywords as well as the daily traffic and the number of competitors iI have to face (Search returns).

Here an example on Obesity:

Keywordsearch for Keyword “Obesity”

What I marked above is what I call my zone of intervention. If the main keyword Obesity gets over 3000 daily searches, we see that the competition is stiff and that we need to get ahead of over 30 Million competitors to reach the top 10 on Google.

The ratio between the number of searches and the number of competitors is much more interesting between rank 2 and 25 on the keyword obesity.

Childhood Obesity looks interesting with 1031 searches.

Pair it with Child Obesity (516), Obesity in Children (339), Obesity in teens (160), Childhood Obesity Facts (139), teenage obesity (121), adolescent obesity (113), teen obesity (109), children obesity (92) and you are already at a total of searches of 2780 and in fact it all has to do with children related obesity. It’s then just important to create your categories and articles along the exact list of key-words you target.

To increase the success in this niche, add closely related categories such as:

Causes of Obesity (1031)

Obesity Statistics (551)

Definition of Obesity (129)

That’s an additional 1711 searches. Add them to the 2780 from above and you get 4491

Now you have taken care of the problem and you may add now the solution (may be you are in the weight loss industry and want to sell products, health plans, weight loss plans, consulting?).

Add now:

Treatments for Obesity (121)

Obesity help (151)

You also can add topics related to America: Obesity in America (343), or others such as: research on obesity (225) and what is obesity (82)…

Note that most of the above key-phrases concern sub-niches with below 1 Million Search returns on Google, an easy target for your Semiomantics site.

By conquering the sub-niches you will gradually improve your ranking on the main term “Obesity” while always remaining in traffic rich environments.

Principle number 4: Be original

No, not everything has been said about your topic; the most important information is yet to be published and that is YOUR STORY!

Existing published knowledge, mixed and enriched with your own story provides original content. Scientific knowledge has very little interest for as long as it is not tweaked into an emotional message. Your own personal experience, your feelings, your sufferings, your joys, your thoughts and your energy will add the salt to the soup and make it worth while slurping … reading … CONSUMING!

Take another example from day to day life: besides obesity, who has not experience in the field of cancer? Be it a personal experience as a patient or as a family member of close persons who suffer from cancer.

Example: Cancer

 Keyword search for keaywor “cancer”

The zone of primary intervention above shows a mix of cancer the pathology, and the astral sign Cancer. In this case we first need to filter what’s of interest to us.

Also, you note that “Breast Cancer” is a mega topic while “Breast Cancer Symptoms” is in the Quick-reach Zone for your Semiomantics site!

Important is not just to talk about cancer, but about YOUR Cancer, the one YOU are sufferuing from or the one a family member is suffering from. Living with a person who is suffering from cancer is not easy since people close by suffer as well and are not supposed to show their pains. The same would aply to AIDS or Alzheimers and so on.

Topics such as “How I cope with m breast cancer, how I cope with post-surgery effects, how ….” are of the utmost interest because these are stories written by real life.

Your story is original, emotional, subjective and that’s exactly where you create the empathy necessary to keep people coming back to read your next article.

Principle number 5: Don’t just inform, COMMUNICATE

There is a lot of information already online and information as such has no value if it is not proliferated to the target audience. And even if you reach the target market, you notice that some publishers are more successful than others.

If you write about prostata cancer in a scientific magazine, you get a few hundred, may be a few thousand readers. If you publish in the New York Times, its a few hundred thousand, and if it’s in Popular Magazines you write about a Star suffering from Prostata Cancer, you reach millions.

Information is flat, factual, information is a Raw Material! By tweaking it and by working with it, by giving it the right framework and by presenting it in a specific way, in a specific light and under a specific angle you will interest your target audience.

What’s your target audience any way? If you follow our example here and you go for Google AdSense, then you need loads of visitors, loads of traffic, since the earning-potential per visitor is very limited (a few cents per click in most cases). That means you aim for a popular audience.

If you need loads of traffic, you need to attract masses, you need to be popular and write for masses. Your first objective being to be found by people using the search engines, your second is to build loyalty. Just information is OK to get one time visitors.

Communication is what makes people come back, what builds loyalty, what builds a growing readership, a community, a group of like-minded people around you and your publication.

Communication is when beyond delivering information you actually TOUCH people, it’s when you deliver more than just brain food, it’s when you touch feelings, the soul, the heart … it’s when you manage to link to people, when you trigger reactions, when you ultimately succeed to plug-in and vice versa.

Communication is when your message is delivered and received. Communication is when you create empathy!

That is why it is so important to use communication tools and means adapted to the expectations of your targeted audience. Don’t use a vocabulary most people wont understand, illustrate your publication with pictures, use examples, testimonials (your personal testimonial above all). Use technology people have no problem with (don’t publish videos where visitors first need to download and install aplayer…). Make it easy to read you (font and font size) make it pleasant to see your site (colors, design), make it easy to surf your site and to find what people may be looking for (lay-out, internal search, site map and so on).

Principle number 6: Trigger Reaction

As lined out above, the first priority is to get visitors to our site. Traffic is generated organically by the fact that we occupy top 10 positions in traffic rich key-phrases on Google for example.

Once your visitor is on your page, your main objective is to keep him there and if possible to make him return. Google Ads won’t help you to achieve this objective, to the contrary: they send people away from your site and you are paid for providing traffic to Google’s advertising customers.

Why would you like visitors to stay on your site?

First because you want to communicate, you want to deliver your message and you would like your message to be well received.

Second, if your site is of interest, visitors will bookmark your site, sign-up with your RSS feed, subscribe to your newsletter, giving you additional chances to deliver content and ads to these visitors.

Third, what starts with a visitor, may convert into a contributor adding thus more contextual content to your site and increasing its interest, popularity and authority attracting thius more traffic to your site.

How do visitors react?

On information people’s reaction is rather flat: they grab the information, they may retain the informative content of your publications and they will forget…YOU rather quickly.

On Communication: it’s more about how you deliver information than what the information is all about! Readers will retain a mix of informative content and personalized, emotional content created by YOU. You start building YOUR personal profile and authority.

You also start to trigger emotional reaction, you trigger re-ACTION. The reaction can be in form of an opt-in or visitors may leave a comment, start a discussion on your site and ultimatively contribute to your content and the value of your site.

Principle number 7: Let other people work for you

To top a niche or a category, you need content, good content and loads of it. The better you communicate, the more reaction you will get from your readers and the more contributions will be created by your visitors. They start working for the good of your site.

You can take it further and invite contributors to become co-authors of your blog to enrichen the content, to diversify the sources and to share the work load.

Think about the Social Networking Buzz: Facebook, MySpace and all the others: they put at our disposal a handfull of toys such as blogs, chats, upload features for video, images and audio and they let us link with other users, that’s it. The rest and the wealth and value of the sites are generated by the USERS! It’s free for Facebook and MySpace and it builds value for Facebook and MySpace.

This shows a historic wealth-building strategy: let other people work for you without paying them and sell the fruit of their labor to make money for yourself. Amazing, no?  And good old Abe (Lincoln that is) was fighting against that business model 150 years ago. Yeah, we fought for eradicating it, with arms, with emotion, with hands and feet…and today the most popular websites and places on earth are MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and similar, where people deliver work, without being paid (slaves were fed at least…no food no health and no labor). And whenthe sites are sold or the shares traded, the members, users and their work is sold!

What we can deduct is that one thing is more important that Money: it’s The 15 Minutes of Glory Principle: people don’t mind giving away the most precious goods they have (their thoughts, time, spirit, work, money…) just for becoming VISIBLE, for exhibiting whatever they want to exhibit.

I don’t intent to be cynic about this issue; I just observe the phenomenon and I try to understand the mechanisms which we then can translate into strategies to profit from the phenomenon.

To conclude: make you site interesting, interesting for your readers and trigger reaction, let people express them-selves, give them the opportunity to enrichen your site, to use it as a discussion platform, a place where they like to return to and to comment, contribuite, click on an ad … increase your wealth.

Principle 8: There is only one thing worse than BAD Press…

…and that’s NO press at all. Remember this one! May be this is the reason why so many people do anything, just about anything, to become visible (the 15 Minutes of Glory again).

Better bad reaction than no reaction. The same applies also to your content. While most people are writing in a positive way about their topics and niches, others are just negative and isn’t it interesting to notice that negative, critical, polemic content gets often great listing and ranking?

Controversy stimulates reaction, reaction builds your site, it’s a way to become visible as well. Negative articles are often full of emotion, hatred and similar. Emotion triggers emotion and emotional reaction.

Example: Write one negative article about say, your preferred Herbalife Product, and you may trigger tons of Herbalife Distributors to react with a comment, building thus content and traffic for you and why not wealth by clicking on Google Ads?

Get the point? Reactions are created best by emotion, positive or negative … the worst is no article, no publication from you end, then the second worst are articles without emotional content as they inform in the best case but they don’t communicate.

Communication is when you trigger material or immaterial reaction! And all starts with a keyword.

Notice: traffic is where there are keywords that bear emotion, that represent topics where people are likely to develop emotion and emotional reaction.

Conclusion
The easiest way to find high traffic keywords and  niches is first in your own emotional sphere. That’s peobably also where you will find the topis where you will be able to communicate emotionally without too much effort.
Once you have a general idea, just assess the market (number of searches) and competition (number of search returns) and short-list the main keyphrases with high traffic and reasonable competitivity (make this your main keywords for your site, Title, Tag line and categories.
The additional keyphrases resulting from your search may be used for your article slogs…that’s it!

I hope this article will help you to choose your niche, your topic for your new Ycademy Publisher Site.

Measure Twice Cut Once - Day 12 of COWpetition

The old saying “Measure Twice Cut Once” is an important one to remember, especially at this phase of your blog creation. Having a blog that is now 95% ready to go live is often a time that a we start to get impatient and want to focus on the promotions to start earning money. This is a HUGE mistake because we suddenly put more items on our plate and get distracted from finishing off important items that seem insignificant but are critical to your blogs initial success.

There is certainly a good balance here as well as there are also those that are never satisfied with what they have and therefore get stuck in analysis paralysis and just sit on thier blog never moving forward with it, never feeling like it is ready. Your blog does not need to have perfect graphics and the exact correct colors, there are what we refer to as “Deal Breakers” which are the items that are critical and then there are the other tasks that are not critical but “Nice to Haves”.

The remaining items to finish before we start to go heavy with the promotions are to…

  • Optimize the optin message and “Thank You” page
  • Checking for errors (broken links)
  • Create and submitting the Google site map (why you want to submit and not just ping)
  • Turn on ping

Part 1 –> Optimize the Opt-in message and “Thank You” page

How often do you go to a blog and see a message like “Subscribe to our RSS feed”?

Do you really think that is effective?

We can guarantee that the majority of you agree it is not yet the majority of you do that very thing. This is one of the factors of your site that is so important and yet our impatience or even laziness cause us to just skim over it and go on to other things. In the previous COWpetition post we reference creating a call to action that was placed at the end of your posts to entice the reader to take a desired action on your blog. This exact same thing needs to take place with getting readers to opt in to your list.

You need to put yourself in the shoes of the reader and answer the question “what is in it for me”. People do not subscribe to RSS feeds for the sake a seeing the word subscribe, the do not submit an email just to see what happens. Never assume that offering free advice is something people will appreciate but instead give your readers what they want by providing a solution to a problem. Whether your blog is about health, automobiles, racing or make money.. there is a problem your readers have and that is why they are on your blog at that moment. It is your responsibility to understand what it is and provide a solution to them with a high percieved value.

Once you know the problem, you now have to tell them how to solve the problem by opting in to your list or subscribing to your rss feed. With the Video Game Reviews blog that we built, the problem that we focusd on was video gamers not having all the latest gaming consoles so they could play all the coolest games and so we offered them a simple way to have a chance to win one. There were a few different ideas we had for opt in headlines, we thought of mentioning how they could make thier friends jealous by showing off ther new system, they could finally stop being the butt of the jokes and actually have a system like everyone else or we could just tell them they can win one and let thier own reason surface. We opted for the last one and made it very obvious to see when they went to the blog what the benefit of opting in was.

Once we had the opt in message ready we now need to figure out how to best use the thank you landing page. This a an extremely valuable piece of virtual real estate and so often we see a thank you page that simply says “Thanks for opting in”. This is where you want to be sure that you give your reader direct instructions on what you want them to do next and it might be giving them an upsell to a product or like with the GamerzReviewz blog we used this to instruct them how to get more chances to win which were by performing actions that promoted GamerzReviewz. This is the critical need to the blog, to get the word out, and so it is the main focus.

Part 2 –>Checking for errors (broken links)

Before we create our sitemap we want to make sure that all links are working and there are no broken ones. Having broken links can cause errors and the search engines will not only not be able to properly access areas of your site but you will give readers the impression of an unfinished, unprofessional site. This is very easy to check with the free tool http://validator.w3.org/checklink

Part 3 –> Create and submitting the Google site map

Now that all the pages on your blog are ready to go, and all the links are checked and acurate, you want to make sure that the search engines are able to easily access all of them. The most effective way is to accomplish this is to create a search engine (mainly Google) specific sitemap and with WordPress this is extremely easy to do with the help of the “Google XML Sitemap” plugin. This plugin creates a sitemap that all the major search engines can read and is very easy to use.

Step 1: Go to the Plugins area and activate the “Google XML Sitemap” plugin.

Step 2: Open a blank notepad file and select save as and save the blank file as “sitemap.xml” and then repeat this step and save a new one as “sitemap.xml.gz”

Step 3: Upload these two new files to the same directory as your robots.txt file and change the permissions on them to six.six.six which is read & write access.

Step 4: Go to “Settings” –> “XML-Sitemap” and on the top of that page in the “Status” area, click on the link that says to build sitemap manually.

Step 5: You sitemap should now be ready and now scroll down and make sure the option “Build the sitemap in a background process (You don’t have to wait when you save a post)” is checked and if you have any extra pages on your blog, such as an opt in thank you page, then you are going to want to put the id# of that page in the “Exclude the following posts or pages:”.

To get the ID #, go to “Manage” –> “Posts” and then mouse over the title of the post and you will see “&post=#”, the # is the post ID.

Step 6: Now go to http://www.google.com/webmasters/ and if you do not already have an account with them, create one and then submit your sitemap. This is very important because the information that Google provides after a few days is very powerful and so do NOT just rely on the “ping” feature with this plugin. We promise that in a few days when we show you the data Google provides, you will be thankful you did this.

Part 4 –> Turn on the Ping

Now it is time to turn on the auto pinging feature in your blog but since we are having FeedBurner doing the pinging for us, we only need to ping FeedBurner and let them do the rest. The benefit of this is the back end issues that pinging the services can cause with your blog and by only pining feedburner you eliminate all these issues.

To do this simply go to Settings –> Writing and scroll down to the “Update Services”  area and enter http://ping.feedburner.com and click “Save Changes”.

Congratulations… We Are Ready For PROMOTING!!!!

COWpetition Week 2 In Review

OK, we are at the start of week 3 and so it is time for the 2nd COWcast and time to open up the Q&A

The feedback on the first COWCast was great (if you attended and want to leave some feedback about it, that would be fantastic… you have to be opted in via email to our list to access it) but before we schedule our second one this week, we want to open it up to any questions and or clarifications in regards to the last  weeks posts.

Here are the links to the posts as a refresher for you )

Please post your questions and clarifications down below )

Initial On Page Optimization with a Dash of FeedBurner and Aweber - Day 11 of COWpetition

We have our content ready, the internal linking set up and our robots.txt file set up. There are just a few more things to take care of and then we can start up the initial promotion engine. These are…

  • 1. SEO Your Index and Link Bait
  • 2. Set up the optin form with FeedBurner and Aweber

Note –> During this time we have actually initiated some of the work in the promotional side of things, but for the sake of keeping things organized in these posts we are laying it out in this order. In the next post we start getting into the promotional side of things.

Part 1 –> SEO Your Index and Link Bait

We are almost ready to go live with our blog but first we need to make sure that it is properly optimized for the search engines. To do this we will use the WordPress plugin called “All In One SEO”.

Step 1: Activate the plugin if not already activated.

Step 2: Go to “Settings” and then “All in One SEO”

Step 3: Enter in a…

  • Home Title
  • Home Description
  • Home Keywords.

These may change after you look at the Affiliate Elite results but you still want something in there for now.

IMPORTANT –> The title of the page is like the headline of a classified ad, this is what Google uses in the main title of the listing and if your title is not formatted properly and compelling then your click through rate is going to be terrible. We have seen many people with great rankings and not great traffic due to this reason. Make a more compelling “ad” then everyone else… you want to get the attention of the person looking at the results in Google.

Google often uses the meta description as the description in the listing as well so explain the title, so if you say you are the best at something then explain why in the description.

For the keywords just put four keyword phrases about your blog, do NOT worry about this too much as Google basically ignores them and they do very little in the other search engines as well.

For the title do not use more the 10 words, for the description keep it under 20 and the keywords just put four or five phrases.

Step 4: Do NOT check the “Use categories for META Keywords” but DO check…

  • Use noindex for Categories:
  • Use noindex for Archives:
  • Use noindex for Tag Archives:

Checking these for exclusion is very useful for avoiding duplicate content.

Also check the “Autogenerate Descriptions” this will autogenerate the description if there’s no excerpt for the post.

Step 5: Go to your Link Bait post and scroll down to the “All in One SEO Pack” form area.

You want to now create a custom…

  • Title
  • Description
  • Keywords

…for this page.

allinoneform

Step 6: Now you want to go to your post text and click on the HTML tab

htmlimage

Step 7: Where ever you have an image in the content look for the alt=”" and you will want to enter text into the alt tag. I recommend you put the main keyword phrase in one of them (ONLY ONE) and then in any other images, simply put what the image is a picture of. This is important from a professional standpoint and is just one of the “MANY” things Google looks at.

Step 8: Last of all go through the post and bold the main keyword phrase once and then Click “SAVE”

Part 2 –> Use FeedBurner and Aweber

We are going to be brutally honest here and tell you exactly how it is. We do not organize contests, spend hours writing content and work our tails off on this blog because we are such nice people. The fact is this is part of a business and our strategy is that by providing excellent value to you and working with you to help you succeed, we will gain your trust so you will opt in to our mailing list which in turn increases our readership and advertising value and hopefully you will also eventually purchase something with us or through us. You NEED to keep this in mind for you business, you have mouths to feed, bills to pay and you need to generate revenue to pay for those things.

Why do we tell you this?

Because we see so many bloggers out there that have no clue and they are going in circles, barely making a penny and they can not figure out why. Not only do they have no idea why they are doing this (we talked about this a while ago) but they also have done absolutely nothing to actually build a business and assets.

Let me ask you this…. What would happen to your current business if Google decided to de-index your blog?

If you have not taken the time to build an asset for your business then the answer you probably have is a pretty colorful one that we will not bother repeating.

So what is an asset? An asset is basically something that you own and has a value and one of the best assets an online business can have (in our opinion) is a subscriber base. With a solid base of subscribers, even if Google totally de-indexed your blog, you would not be lost at sea, you would still have a revenue stream and your business could still grow.

Of course there is more to having a list of subscribers then that but hopefully you are getting the picture here.

With a blog one of the easiest ways to gain subscribers is through the blogs RSS feed. This is very effective for staying in touch with your readers however it has its limitations but using a service like FeedBurner.com is an excellent way to overcome those limitations. They allow you to optimize and advertise and even offer a mail option where subscribers can subscribe via email. The problem with the FeedBurner option by itself however is you do not really own the asset, instead you are left at the mercy of FeedBurner.

The Solution –> The solution to this issue is using the mailing list service Aweber with FeedBurner.

We do not want to NOT offer a RSS subscription option for those that prefer to use a RSS reader and we of course want to be able to publicize our RSS readership size for monetization purposes but at the same time we want to grow an asset that we own and can have total control over. This is where Aweber is very powerful because it works beautifully with FeedBurner to get the best of both worlds! You can also mail your list personalized messages, gifts to increase trust and the occasional offer (which is what this is all about). A word of caution however, if you are mailing a promotion… make darn sure you truly believe it is something your readers would be interested in and is something you believe is worth while for them. Do NOT send them crap or you will lose their trust!

Note –> We know of no other mailing list service that works with FeedBurner like Aweber does for being able to get the full benefits of FeedBurner tracking.

Step 1: Go to http://www.feedburner.com/ and create a free account

Step 2: Submit your RSS feed and then click the “Activate Feed” button.

Step 3: Click the “Next” button and then on the next page check the…

“I want more! Have FeedBurner Stats PRO also track:” (This is now free)

NOTE –> There is an option here to optimize the links fro tracking purposes versus search engine optimizing… personally we like to leave it at default to get the most accurate tracking but the choice is up to you.

Step 4: Click the “Optimize” tab and then click on “SmartFeed” in the side bar and activate this.

Step 5: Click the “Ping Shot” in the side bar and click all the available service and then add 5 more from the drop down box and then click “Activate”

Step 6: This step is only for those who do NOT have an Aweber account. Click on the “Email Subscriptions” in the side bar and click “Activate”. You will then take the supplied html code and enter it into a “Text” widget for your sidebar of your blog. Make sure to have it as close to the top of the sidebar as possible.

Step 7: If you have an Aweber account, you will not want to complete step 6 but instead log into your Aweber account and click on “Create and Manage Lists”

d9334fv_25gr6cm6gx_b

Step 8: Click the green “Create List” button and fill in the following but make sure to click the save button in each section that you fill:

  • List Name
  • Uncheck “Multiple Unsubscribe”
  • Company Name (use name of blog)
  • Website URL
  • Email Address (this is what your subscribers will see)
  • Name
  • Check the From/Reply

Step 11: Click the “Messages” tab and “Blog Broadcast” sub menu and then the green “Create Blog Broadcast” button.

Step 12: Enter the following information…

  • RSS Feed URL: Put your FeedBurner RSS feed URL in here
  • Send Preferences: Send immediately and check Send Automatically
  • Click the green “Load Templates” (Just use the basic template)
  • In the “Plain Text Message” delete the lines…{!rss_channel_title}
    {!rss_channel_description}
    {!rss_channel_link}

…and replace them with something like…

    Hey {!firstname_fix},
Here is the latest update from Website Name Here…

(Obviously use something in your own voice)

    It should look like this…

    d9334fv_26cjhrcnfp_b

Repeat the same step for the HTML message and so it looks like…

    d9334fv_27fw6npcjc_b

    Click the green save button.

Step 13: Go to “List Settings”, then the sub menu “Web Form” and click the green “Create Web form” button.

Step 14: Fill in the following information…

  • Form Name
  • Check “In line”
  • Create a “Thank You” page on your blog and put the URL to the Thank You page in the field (DO not use the Aweber default).
  • Put that same URL in the “Already Subscribed Page” field. (This is what we do initially but later on we change this but we will talk about that later)
  • Click Next and add the “Name” option to the form and then mouse over the Name field in the preview box and click on the blue box with a pencil in it. In the drop down now select “Yes” for required.
  • Click Save.

Step 15: Click on the Get HTML link and copy the HTML not the JavaScript.

Step 16: Log into your blog admin area and go to the “Design” and then “Widgets”. Click the “Add” beside the “Text” option to add a text widget and then click “edit” on the new added widget. Enter the HTML for the optin and click “change” and then “Save Changes”

Step 17: Drag the widget to the top of the widgets and again click “Save Changes”

Step 18: Go to your blog index page and view the optin box to make sure it is properly formatted to work with your blog. We will talk about formatting the optin message and thank you page in the next post.

Step 19: Go the Plugins page and activate the plugin “FeedBurner Feedsmith” and then go to “Settings” and then “FeedBurner”

Step 20: In the #2 box, enter your FeedBurner RSS feed URL, leave the #3 empty and then click save. Your RSS feed will now auto redirect to the FeedBurner one.

In the next post we are going to talk about…

  • Optimizing your optin message and “Thank You” page
  • Creating and submitting your Google site map (why you want to submit and not just ping)
  • Checking for errors

Hope you found this a helpful post! Do not forget to register for our HUGE contest if you have not done so already (Click Here to do that now) and as always give us some feedback, questions and comments about this post )
